Well, last week I was bragging about the rain down here. Its
still raining, which is good...but now I'm sick! I can't re-
member the last time I was sick, and here we have a week or
so of rain and blam! I'm sick.
Oh well, everyone has to be a little 'under the weather' once
in a while.
Til next week,

2. 2-Tier programs: Who does the selling?
==========================================
One of the things I learned early on with AffiliateMatch is
that signing up hundreds of webmasters under me in every
2-tier program is NOT necessarily the way to having a
successful online business.
The theory sounds solid: you get a bunch of sites to signup
under you and you make a percentage of their sales. Once they
start making the sales you just sit back and enjoy the free
money that comes pouring in.
The problem is that they are thinking the exact same thing
you are. They find as many people to join under them and
hope their second tier will make sales.
This goes on and on and no one actually does any selling.
Don't get me wrong, occasionally you will find someone that
is good at making sales and you will get your percentage.
The problem is that you can't always count on this. You
can't count on being lucky enough to find them, and you
can't count on the fact that they will be able to sustain
the same level of sales.
I've had several instances where someone starts really
selling for a particular program, and making me a nice
additional income. Then, just as quickly as they started
making sales they stop.
Was it a one-time promotion to their subscribers?
Was there something that prompted them to stop promoting
the products?
Were they terminated from the program for some reason?
No telling, but one thing for sure is that the extra
income is now gone again.
Unfortunately it isn't very smart to run your business
on luck.
"If I can just get 10 people, and each one makes me
$100 a month...that's $1,000!!"
'If' is a big word. The better approach is to work on
selling the products yourself, and then consider any
second tier income as icing on the cake.
I'm not suggesting that you stop promoting the program
to other webmasters, or don't spend anytime helping them,
you still need to do this.
You need to make selling the products your first priority
and working your second tier income second.
You really don't have any control over what they do. You
can put together the best training materials showing
exactly how to sell.
You can email them once a week with motivational speeches.
But in the long run THEY are the ones that determine how
much and how long they are going to promote it.
On the other hand you DO control the amount of time and
effort you put into selling. If one approach isn't working
you can try another. Eventually you come across the right
combination of selling techniques that clicks with your
target audience.
Then you start to feel more in control of your destiny.
Here's another thought: When you introduce someone to a
program, you are their best teacher. I'm sure you've also
heard the saying that actions speak louder than words.
If your website and newsletter are geared towards selling
the products, your second tier will mimic that.
If you spend all of your efforts promoting the program
itself, they will do the same.
Then you end up with a bunch of people building a second
tier beneath them and no one doing any selling.
Many merchants will try to discourage this type of thinking
by making the second tier commission so small that it won't
seem attractive to do this.
Another clever approach taken by Ken Evoy of SiteSell
( http://affmatch.com/myss ) is to tie your percentage of
second tier earnings to the amount of your sales for the
month.
So, if your second tier is selling like gang busters, but
you are sitting back not selling anything, say bye-bye to
your piece of the action.
This may seem a little harsh, but if you think about it,
this discourages the above problems from happening.
Besides, the best way to teach someone how to sell some-
thing is to tell them what your most successful strategies
are.
A few of my favorite 2-tier programs:
SiteSell http://www.affmatch.com/myss
Aweber Autoresponders http://www.affmatch.com/aweber
Roibot http://www.affmatch.com/roibot
Nextcard http://www.affmatch.com/nextcardN
You can see more 2-tier programs here:

Just remember, focus on sales and let the second tier
income be icing on the cake...
